With India being on a path to become a world superpower, the consumption capacity and standard of living has been on an exponential rise. Cosmetic industry (including skin care, hair care, oral care, fragrances, and color cosmetics etc.) is also one of them, the size of the Indian cosmetic market at present is approximately USD 6.5 billion (538.59 billion INR) and estimated to grow at an exceptional CAGR of 25% to reach a market size of around USD 20 billion. Cosmetics in India are governed under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 read with Cosmetic Rules, 2020 with products specific Indian Standards regulates the cosmetic industry. Cosmetic is defined as “any article intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on, or introduced into, or otherwise applied to, the human body or any part thereof for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering the appearance, and includes any article intended for use as a component of cosmetic.” The regulatory authority under the act is the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and cosmetic needs to be manufactured, stored and sold as provided for under the Act.
