As FMCGs are consumed by public at large, the law provides a system to keep them safe for consumption and provide necessary information for consumers to make informed decisions. There are numerous laws which govern and regulate FMCGs, depending upon the type of the product, such as pre-packaged food is governed under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, ayurvedic products under Drugs and Cosmetic Act, 1940, while general products are majorly treated under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. While in addition to these general laws, specific Indian Standards or statutory bodies regulations, circulars, notification etc. may also be applicable. Being a consumer centric industry, the players are also required to be in compliance with the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
